Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 18, 2026

Welcome to 404 Department.

We make shirts for unstable systems, but we do not play weird games with your data. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and what choices you have when you visit our website, place an order, submit a 404, or interact with our brand.

By using this website, you agree to the practices described below.

1. Who we are

This website is operated by 404 Department.

Website: 404department.com
Contact email: 404deptartmentinfo@gmail.com

When this policy says “we,” “us,” or “our,” it means 404 Department.

When this policy says “you,” it means the person visiting our site, buying something, submitting an idea, signing up for updates, or otherwise interacting with us.

2. Information we collect

We collect information in a few different ways.

Information you give us directly

When you place an order, contact us, sign up for emails, or submit an idea, we may collect:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Shipping address
  • Billing address
  • Phone number, if provided
  • Order details
  • Payment-related information
  • Messages you send us
  • Social media handle, if you submit one
  • Shirt ideas, jokes, taglines, or other submission content you send through “Submit a 404”

We are not asking for your deepest lore. We only collect what we need to run the store, fulfill orders, communicate with you, and keep the brand moving.

Information collected automatically

When you visit our site, certain information may be collected automatically, such as:

  • IP address
  • Browser type
  • Device type
  • Pages viewed
  • Time spent on the site
  • Referring website or ad
  • Approximate location based on your device or IP address
  • Cookies and similar tracking technologies

This helps us understand what is working, what is broken, and whether people are actually clicking the shirts or just lurking respectfully.

Payment information

Payments are processed through Shopify and/or third-party payment providers. We do not directly store your full credit card number. Payment processors handle payment information according to their own security and privacy practices.

3. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Process and fulfill orders
  • Send order confirmations and shipping updates
  • Provide customer support
  • Respond to questions or messages
  • Manage returns, refunds, damaged items, or order issues
  • Improve the website and shopping experience
  • Understand which products, pages, and ads perform best
  • Send marketing emails or updates, if you opt in
  • Review “Submit a 404” ideas for possible future drops
  • Contact you if your submission is selected or needs follow-up
  • Prevent fraud, abuse, spam, or security issues
  • Comply with legal, tax, accounting, and business obligations

We use data to operate the business. Not to be creepy. Not to stalk. Not to build a villain dashboard.

4. Submit a 404 submissions

If you submit a joke, shirt idea, error-message line, tagline, handle, or other creative idea through our site, we may use the information you provide to review your submission and contact you if needed.

Submission information may include:

  • Your name
  • Your email
  • Your social handle
  • Your submitted idea
  • Any explanation or context you provide

Submitting an idea does not guarantee it will be used, selected, paid, credited, or released. If we decide to move forward with a submitted idea for a paid product release, we may contact you separately with written confirmation and any applicable terms.

Please do not submit private information, someone else’s personal information, confidential material, or anything you do not have permission to share.

5. Cookies and tracking

Our site may use cookies, pixels, analytics tools, and similar technologies.

These may help us:

  • Keep the website functioning
  • Remember preferences
  • Understand site traffic
  • Measure ad performance
  • Improve product pages
  • Run retargeting or marketing campaigns
  • Detect fraud or suspicious activity

Some cookies are necessary for the site to work. Others help with analytics or marketing.

You can usually control cookies through your browser settings. Depending on your location, you may also see cookie preferences, consent options, or data-sharing opt-out tools on our website.

6. Email and marketing

If you sign up for emails, submit your email, or opt in during checkout, we may send you:

  • Drop announcements
  • Product launches
  • Brand updates
  • Discount codes
  • Submission updates
  • Other 404 Department marketing messages

You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time by using the unsubscribe link in the email.

Even if you unsubscribe from marketing, we may still send necessary transactional emails, such as order confirmations, shipping updates, support replies, or legal notices.

7. How we share information

We may share information with trusted service providers that help us run the store, including:

  • Shopify
  • Payment processors
  • Print-on-demand or fulfillment providers, including Printify or related production partners
  • Shipping carriers
  • Email and SMS marketing platforms
  • Analytics providers
  • Advertising platforms
  • Fraud prevention tools
  • Customer support tools
  • Professional advisors, such as accountants or legal providers, if needed

These providers only receive information needed to perform their services.

We do not sell your personal information like some cursed side quest. However, some advertising or analytics activities may be considered “sharing,” “targeted advertising,” or “sale” under certain privacy laws. Where required, we will provide opt-out options.

8. Printify and fulfillment partners

If your order is produced or fulfilled through Printify or another fulfillment partner, we may share order details needed to make and ship your product, such as:

  • Name
  • Shipping address
  • Product ordered
  • Size
  • Color
  • Quantity
  • Shipping method
  • Contact information needed for delivery or support

They need this information to print the shirt and get it to you. The shirt cannot teleport yet.

9. Shopify and third-party platforms

Our store may be hosted and powered by Shopify. Shopify may process information connected to your visit, checkout, order, payment, and customer account experience.

We may also use third-party tools for analytics, email, ads, forms, customer service, or social media. These tools may collect or process information according to their own privacy policies.

10. Advertising and analytics

We may use analytics and advertising tools to understand how people find and use our site. These tools may collect information about your device, browser, pages viewed, purchases, clicks, and interactions with ads.

This helps us answer important business questions, like:

  • Which shirt is getting attention?
  • Which ad is actually working?
  • Which page is losing people?
  • Are people here to buy, submit a joke, or silently judge the layout?

We may use this information to improve the website and show more relevant ads.

11. Data retention

We keep personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to:

  • Fulfill orders
  • Provide support
  • Maintain business records
  • Comply with tax, accounting, legal, and fraud prevention obligations
  • Resolve disputes
  • Review submissions
  • Run the store properly

When we no longer need the information, we may delete it, anonymize it, or keep it only as required by law or legitimate business needs.

12. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights related to your personal information, including the right to:

  • Access the personal information we have about you
  • Correct inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of certain information
  • Opt out of certain marketing communications
  • Opt out of certain targeted advertising or data sharing
  • Request a copy of your information
  • Limit or object to certain uses of your information

To make a privacy request, contact us at:

404deptartmentinfo@gmail.com

We may need to verify your identity before completing certain requests.

13. Children’s privacy

Our website is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to remove it.

14. Security

We use reasonable measures and trusted platforms to help protect your information.

That said, no website, platform, checkout system, or database is 100% secure. The internet is still the internet. We work to protect your information, but we cannot guarantee absolute security.

15. International visitors

If you visit our website from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate.

By using the site, you understand that privacy laws in those countries may be different from the laws where you live.

16. Links to other websites

Our website may link to third-party websites, platforms, or social media pages.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices, content, or security of websites we do not own or control. If you click away from 404 Department, read their policies too. Yes, that is annoying. Yes, it matters.

17. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.

If we make changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the website after changes means you accept the updated policy.
